SpaceInfo (spaceinfo.org) respects the intellectual property rights of creators, photographers, scientists, and publishers. We expect our visitors and contributors to do the same. This DMCA Policy explains how copyright owners can report content they believe infringes their rights, and how we handle those reports under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512).
1. Our Commitment to Copyright
Space and astronomy content often involves images, data, and text from many sources. We make every effort to use original writing, properly licensed images, and public-domain material. Many of the images and videos related to space exploration come from agencies such as NASA, whose content is generally in the public domain, and from free stock providers such as Pexels, which allow free use under their own license. When we quote or reference other sources, we link back to the original.
Despite our care, mistakes can happen. If you believe something on our site infringes your copyright, we want to hear from you and will act quickly.
2. Reporting Copyright Infringement
If you are a copyright owner, or are authorized to act on behalf of one, and you believe that material on spaceinfo.org infringes your copyright, you may submit a written notice of infringement. To be valid under the DMCA, your notice must include all of the following:
- Your signature. A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on their behalf.
- Identification of the copyrighted work. A description of the work you claim has been infringed. If multiple works are covered by a single notice, a representative list is acceptable.
- Identification of the infringing material. The exact URL(s) on spaceinfo.org where the material appears, so we can locate it quickly.
- Your contact information. Your full name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
- A statement of good faith. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement of accuracy. A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.
3. Where to Send Your Notice
Please send your complete DMCA notice by email to:
Use the subject line “DMCA Takedown Notice – spaceinfo.org.” Incomplete notices may delay our response, because we may need to ask you for more information.
4. What Happens After We Receive Your Notice
When we receive a valid DMCA notice, we will:
- Review the claim promptly and in good faith.
- Remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing material where appropriate.
- Notify the person who posted or is responsible for the material, if applicable, that it has been removed and why.
- Provide a copy of the notice to that person if required.
Most valid requests are handled within a few business days. We may also keep a record of the notice for legal purposes.
5. Counter-Notification
If you believe that material you provided was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may submit a counter-notification. Your counter-notice must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the material that was removed and the location where it appeared before removal.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed because of a mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, address, and telephone number.
- A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for the district where you live (or, if outside the United States, any judicial district in which SpaceInfo may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who submitted the original notice.
Send your counter-notification to ok6549538@gmail.com with the subject line “DMCA Counter-Notice – spaceinfo.org.”
If we receive a valid counter-notice, we may forward it to the original complainant. Unless the complainant notifies us that they have filed a court action seeking to restrain the alleged infringement within 10 to 14 business days, we may restore the removed material.
6. Repeat Infringers
In appropriate circumstances, SpaceInfo will terminate access for users or contributors who are repeat infringers of copyright. We reserve the right to block anyone who repeatedly submits infringing material.
7. False or Misleading Claims
Please be aware that under Section 512(f) of the DMCA, anyone who knowingly makes a material misrepresentation that content is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, may be liable for damages, including costs and attorneys’ fees. Before sending a notice, please consider whether the use might qualify as fair use or fall under another legal exception. We encourage you to consult a legal professional if you are unsure.
8. Public Domain and Licensed Content
To help you understand how we handle media:
- NASA and other government images: Many images from NASA are not subject to copyright in the United States, but they may carry usage guidelines, and some third-party images hosted on NASA sites are copyrighted. We credit sources wherever possible.
- Pexels and similar stock sites: Photos and videos are provided under the Pexels License, which generally allows free use without attribution, though we often credit photographers as a courtesy.
- Original content: Articles, graphics, and layouts created by SpaceInfo are our own and are protected by copyright.
If you notice an image credited incorrectly, or you are the creator and would like a credit added or the image removed, contact us and we will fix it.
9. Protecting Our Own Content
All original text, graphics, logos, and design elements on spaceinfo.org are the property of SpaceInfo unless otherwise stated. You may share short excerpts with a clear link back to the original article. You may not copy entire articles, republish our content, or use it commercially without written permission. If you find that someone has copied our work without permission, please let us know at the email above.
10. Disclaimer
This policy is for informational purposes and does not constitute legal advice. SpaceInfo reserves the right to remove content at its discretion and to modify this DMCA Policy at any time. Changes take effect when posted on this page.
